There are plenty of reasons you might find yourself needing oral surgery at your nearby dental office. Maybe it’s a tooth extraction, an implant, or a bone or gum line graft. Whatever the case, postoperative care is just as important as the procedure itself.
One topic that often comes up during recovery is whether I can rinse with hydrogen peroxide.
What Is Hydrogen Peroxide?
Hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) is basically water with an extra oxygen atom. It has strong disinfecting power, bubbling up when you pour it on a cut. Hydrogen peroxide is not inherently safe for regular or direct use on gums, as it can be too harsh, cause irritation, and damage gum tissue and delicate dental work.

The truth is, you should NEVER rinse with Hydrogen Peroxide after surgical procedures.
After oral surgery, you might want to get rid of the small amount of blood mixed with your saliva. However, you should never rinse or brush for the first 24 hours. You need that time to form a stable blood clot over the surgical site. If you dislodge it, it could lead to pain, more bleeding, or even dry socket.
Once the first 24 hours have passed, gently brush your teeth using a soft-bristle toothbrush. For rinsing, use salt water or a prescribed medication called Chlorhexidine a few times a day, especially after meals.
Avoid store-bought products, as they may contain higher or uncontrolled concentrations of the ingredient, which can cause irritation or other complications.
Understanding Blood Clots
Your body naturally forms a blood clot to stop wounds from bleeding until they heal. As such, allowing it to stay in place is crucial.
Oral surgeons usually place a piece of gauze over the area and ask you to bite firmly for 30 to 45 minutes. If the bleeding continues and you are close by, your dentist can replace the gauze and have you bite down again for another half hour.
At home, change out your gauze as needed. Do not suck through straws, spit forcefully, or rinse aggressively until there is a solid clot.
